Origins
Like other totalitarian regimes, the Soviet Union sought total control over their nation's literature, arts, and culture in efforts to produce one, defining art form. Art styles of totalitarian regimes were usually propagandistic, nationalistic, and meant to be inspirational. For the Soviet Union, this style became known as Socialist Realism. Socialist Realism was indicative of the communist regime’s ideology: protecting the regime that protected the workers. Socialist art was the official and only art of the Soviet Union, as anything else meant treason.
